The Hot Rocks Experiment
(Fall Quarter, 2005)

Sixth graders are using their measurement skills to take the temperature of different types of rocks exposed to different times of sunlight.

Our classmate is checking the temperatures of the rocks.   She is recording the temperature of the rocks.
This is the table of our measurements.  Our classmates are writing their explanations.
Our classmates are working hard. " Wow this looks like the coolest rock!"

Results Of Experiment Based On Means Of The Measurements
By Four Groups Of Students.

Explanation Of Results:

On the first day Mrs. Kerr said we were doing an experiment on which rock stayed the coolest in the sun. Our choices were Trap Rock, Black Lava, White Marble, and Pink Starburst. We divided up into four groups of four. Then, we took four clear tubs and filled them with 2.5lbs of the types of rock for each member of the group. Next, we covered them with plastic wrap and placed thermometers in them.  Then, we put them outside and checked them 4 different times.

On day two we reported our measurements to Mrs. Kerr. She used the temperatures to make a chart on the chalkboard. Then we copied the chart down on a piece of paper and took a quiz on our project.

On day three we answered questions about our project. Our group needed to find a rock that stayed cool for Whatahockey beach. We decided that Trap Rock stayed the coolest in the middle of the day, Black Lava is the hottest, and Pink Starburst and White Marble stayed cool. We believe White Marble will stay cooler because it doesn’t attract as much sunlight. We first put 2.5lbs of rocks in clear tubs and covered them with plastic wrap. Then we stuck a thermometer in the rocks, took them outside and set them in the sunlight. Our recorder Brooke recorded the temperatures four times. White Marble stayed the coolest throughout the day. Next it was Pink Starburst. Then it was Trap Rock. Black Lava was the hottest.

We conclude that White Marble stayed the coolest, so it would be best for Lake Watahockey beach. We would do this over if we had the chance because it was windy and not as hot as it had been.
